Forex Market Sessions
Foreign exchange operates 24 hours a day across global financial hubs. Track Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York session status, live countdowns to market opens and closes, and critical high-liquidity overlap windows.
The Four Major Global Trading Sessions
1. Sydney Session (Asia-Pacific Open)
08:00 – 17:00 AEDT/AESTSydney marks the start of the global trading day on Monday morning (Sunday afternoon in Western hemispheres). While total volume is comparatively light, it dictates initial sentiment for the Australian Dollar (AUD) and New Zealand Dollar (NZD). Major releases include RBA rate statements and Australian employment metrics.
2. Tokyo Session (Asian Session)
09:00 – 18:00 JSTTokyo is the commercial powerhouse of the East, accounting for major Japanese Yen (JPY) flow. Key price discovery occurs during the domestic Tokyo commercial fix at 09:55 local time (00:55 UTC), where Japanese exporters and import conglomerates settle foreign currency balances.
3. London Session (European Session)
08:00 – 17:00 GMT/BSTLondon is the undisputed financial capital of global currency trading, handling over 38% of total daily global volume. The London open (08:00 local) frequently triggers aggressive institutional liquidity sweeps of Asian session highs and lows, setting multi-session trends for EUR, GBP, and CHF.
4. New York Session (North American Session)
08:00 – 17:00 EST/EDTHandling over 19% of global FX volume, New York trading is intensely driven by US Dollar fundamentals. The first half of the New York session coincides with the European afternoon, creating the London / New York overlap—the period of deepest liquidity, highest volatility, and tightest bid-ask spreads of the entire day.
Dynamic Daylight Saving Time (DST) Handling
Many outdated trading websites hardcode session hours using static UTC numbers (e.g. claiming London is permanently 07:00 UTC). This leads to severe timing errors when the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia shift to Daylight Saving Time on different calendar weekends each spring and autumn.
FINZOVA uses browser-native IANA Timezone rules (Europe/London, America/New_York, Asia/Tokyo, Australia/Sydney) to dynamically re-derive UTC offsets every single second, guaranteeing 100% timing accuracy year-round.
Forex Weekend Hours & Trading Gaps
Retail Forex trading officially pauses on Friday at 17:00 New York local time (market close in North America) and re-opens on Sunday at 17:00 New York local time (as Sydney financial institutions resume business).
Holding positions through the weekend carries significant gap risk. Breaking geopolitical news or weekend elections can cause the market to open dozens of pips above or below Friday's closing price, bypassing stop loss orders.
