What is a Pip in Forex Trading?
A “pip” (percentage in point or price interest point) is the standardized unit of measurement representing the smallest price move that an exchange rate can make. For most currency pairs, 1 pip equals 0.0001 of the quote currency. For Japanese Yen pairs, 1 pip equals 0.01.
How Does It Work?
The monetary value of a pip depends on three factors: the currency pair traded, the size of your position, and your account base currency. When the quote currency matches your account currency (e.g. trading EUR/USD in a USD account), 1 pip for 1 standard lot is always exactly $10.00 USD.
Mathematical Formula
Worked Numerical Example
Example: Trading 1 Standard Lot of USD/JPY at 150.00 with a USD Account
- Pip Size: 0.01 JPY
- Contract Size: 100,000 USD
- Pip Value in JPY: 0.01 * 100,000 = 1,000 JPY
- Converted to USD: 1,000 JPY / 150.00 = $6.67 USD per pip
Common Mistakes Traders Make
- Assuming all currency pairs have a $10.00 pip value regardless of the quote currency.
- Confusing fractional pips (pipettes, 5th decimal place) with full pips.
- Miscalculating JPY pairs by an order of magnitude (100x error) by treating 0.0001 as 1 pip.
Professional Risk Management Advice
Always verify the pip value of cross pairs (e.g. EUR/GBP or AUD/NZD) before entering large positions. A pair with a higher pip value will incur greater dollar volatility for the same pip movement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pipette?
A pipette is a fractional pip, equal to 1/10th of a pip (0.1 pip). Most modern brokers display 5 decimal places (or 3 for JPY), where the final superscript number is a pipette.
Does pip value change as the exchange rate moves?
If your account currency is the base currency (e.g. trading USD/JPY or USD/CAD in a USD account), pip value fluctuates slightly as the exchange rate changes. If your account currency is the quote currency (e.g. EUR/USD in USD), pip value remains fixed at $10/lot.
